LAKES REGION HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWS

The Lakes Region Historical Society will present Joel Greenberg and A Portrait Of A Changing Landscape on Thursday, April 28th at 7:30 p.m. at The Meeting House.

Using both contemporary and historical slides, Joel tells the story of how the landscape of the Chicago Region has changed in the 300 years since the first Europeans arrived.  The area was a rich mosaic of prairies, savannas, forests, and wetlands that harbored an amazing diversity of life.  Most of this bounty is gone, but the good news is that a surprising amount still survives, largely because many foresighted persons fought to set aside refuges of natural land.  This story is also, then, not just about how nature has changed, but how human attitudes have changed as well.

A life-long resident of northeastern Illinois (except for his college years), Joel Greenberg has been interested in natural history since the age of five.  His training in the law and environmental policy was motivated by his desire to work in the environmental protection field.  He has worked on numerous environmental issues as an employee of the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, City of Chicago’s Dept. of Environment, and Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.  He is the author of two books, A Birder’s Guide to the Chicago Region published by Northern Illinois University Press and his highly acclaimed A Natural History of the Chicago Region published by the University of Chicago in 2002.  In addition to his ongoing writing projects, Greenberg is an environmental consultant on the staff of Integrated Lakes Management.
